Cybersecurity Awareness Week

This month from the 1st - 5th of June sees the return of Cybersecurity Awareness Week.

For ideas on how to celebrate cybersafety in your library have a look at The City of Wanneroo Libraries in WA. Wanneroo will celebrate with a four-day program including a live cybersafety show from Constable Care and using these great posters (pictured). Find out more.

Spotlight on Blacktown Libraries NSW

Spotlight on eSmart resources

This month our resources focus on 'Domain Three - Effective Staff Knowledge and Capabilities'. An essential component of this domain is exploring staff knowledge and skills, with the aim to empower staff to confidently model eSmart behaviours and have the capability to respond to cyber-breeches consistently and effectively. We have picked out these eSmart resources to help you do this. 

Additional cybersafety resources

Did you know that 80% of bystanders don't intervene in cyberbullying? And when they do, they stop the bullying more than half the time.

Commonsense Media provides practical tips for adults and children in five videos titled 'Five ways to stop cyberbullying'. Click to watch.

The eSmart Digital Licence (eDL) has free access to the best cybersafety resource on the web. Library packages available. 

Top cybersafety websites for users

As librarians you will often receive queries from library users worried about online scams, hoax emails, iPhone privacy settings, website recommendations ... the list goes on. Here are some websites that you can refer your users to. 

Upcoming industry events 

No2Bullying Conference - 29 to 30th June: 
A highly educational event on bullying and cyberbullying prevention, with practical workshops. 

The Australian Library Evolution - 19 to 20 August: Sydney plays host to a two day conference to look at the future of libraries. eSmart Libraries Manager, Jacqui Kinder, will present on how eSmart Libraries can better manage their digital capabilities.

Portland Library and Campaspe Library in Victoria have both been encouraging their library members to take part in the eSmart Libraries evaluation. Click here to read the article in Portland's local paper. 

National Buddy Day, Friday 12 June

On Friday 12 June school children across the country will come together to celebrate National Buddy Day. Schools will hold activities to fundraise for The Alannah and Madeline Foundation to help reduce bullying in schools across Australia. Do you know if your local school is participating? eSmart Community

During National Volunteer Week last month we celebrated the tireless work of our amazing team of volunteers at The Alannah and Madeline Foundation. The Foundation engages over 300 volunteers each year to help support our programs and events. We are so lucky to have their support! 

Online health management 

Our partner Telstra has recently launched MyCareManager, an online home health monitoring product to help reduce hosptial admissions.Through a combination of video conferencing, telemedicine and a patient portal, MyCareManager will enable people to stay in their own home while receiving the care they need. A great tool to refer your senior library users to - find out more. 

Our partnership with the Telstra Foundation

Launched in August 2012 by the former Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon. Julia Gillard MP, our $8 million, multi-year partnership with the Telstra Foundation is delivering eSmart Libraries in collaboration with Australia's library network over the next six years to all of Australia's 1,500 public libraries for free. eSmart Libraries is now in 40% of public libraries across the country.
